On the 75th anniversary of D-Day, the Omaha Sister Cities Association (OSCA) and Mayor Jean Stothert announced a new sister city relationship: a partnership that will pair the City of Omaha with Omaha Beach and its surrounding communities in Normandy, France.
The Association first contacted the Isigny-Omaha Intercom last October, to propose a sister city relationship with the Intercom, a region of 59 townships in northern France that includes Omaha Beach, one of the most famous landing beaches of D-Day. French officials shared the interest in forming a sister city relationship, and agreed to an exchange of official delegations to explore the details of a partnership.
In early March, a delegation of five Normandy mayors visited Omaha. They had the chance to meet with Mayor Jean Stothert at City Hall and area attractions: University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO), Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium and Durham Museum. They also met with members of OSCA, Alliance Française and the Omaha business community. A month later, a delegation from Omaha journeyed to Normandy and visited the American Cemetery at Colleville-Sur-Mer, the University of Caen, the Isigny Ste Mère dairy factory (known around the world) and historical landscapes of WWII. The delegations concluded that there are many areas of common interest that will be attractive for cultural and educational exchange, as well as business relationships.
In announcing plans to initiate a friendship agreement as a first step to a Sister City relationship, Mayor Jean Stothert declared, “Omaha Beach is part of our country’s past, and will always be remembered. History connects us, and the future will provide many opportunities for cultural, educational, business, and most importantly, the personal relationships which are fundamental to all Sister Cities.”

She concluded, “It is an honor for the City of Omaha to develop a Sister City relationship with the Isigny-Omaha region.” Andy Schilling, Greater Omaha Chamber’s Senior Director – International Business Development and Vice-President of the Omaha Sister Cities Association, underscored the iconic historic connection between the City of Omaha and Omaha Beach, France.
“The memory, the emotion and the reverence for the heroism of our servicemen at D-Day are all still prominent in their gratitude and appreciation for their sacrifice,” Schilling said.
Isigny-Omaha Intercom will be the City of Omaha’s seventh Sister City. The others are Shizuoka, Japan; Braunschweig, Germany; Siauliai, Lithuania; Naas, Ireland; Xalapa, Mexico; and Yantai, China.
“Omaha’s Sister City Association brings the world to Omaha,” said Mayor Stothert, who also serves as the Honorary Chair of the Association. “These relationships are important to our growth as a partner in international trade and education.”
Plans are in place to formalize the sister city partnership process with the signing of an official Friendship Agreement – Charte d’Amitié – in Normandy in mid-October 2019.

Le 6 juin 2019, la ville d’Omaha (Nebraska) et l’association Omaha Sister Cities ont annoncé leur volonté de signer une charte de jumelage avec la communauté de communes d’Isigny-Omaha (Calvados), composée de 59 communes dont celle de la célèbre plage d’Omaha Beach, théâtre du débarquement américain en Normandie le 6 Juin 1944.
Cette annonce fait suite à plusieurs déplacements entre nos deux pays. Ainsi au cours du mois de mars dernier, une délégation de cinq maires normands s’est rendu à Omaha. Le mois suivant, une délégation de personnalités d’Omaha s’est déplacée à son tour en Normandie.
« Omaha Beach fait partie de notre histoire, et restera à jamais gravée dans nos mémoires » a dit la maire Stothert dans son discours annonçant ce nouveau partenariat. « L’histoire nous relie, et le futur nous permettra de développer des actions tant culturelles, éducatives, qu’économiques. Mais le socle de nos échanges sera, comme pour tous les jumelages mis en place par Omaha Sister Cities, les relations humaines. Développer une nouvelle Sister City avec cette région de France est un honneur pour la ville d’Omaha. »
La communauté de communes d’Isigny-Omaha sera la septième « ville » jumelée avec Omaha. Ainsi après la première charte de jumelage signée en 1965 avec la ville de Shizouka, d’autres ont suivi et notamment Braunschweig (Allemagne), Siauliai (Lituanie), Naas (Irlande), Xalapa (Mexique) et Yantai (Chine) en 2010.
« La relation iconique entre Omaha (Nebraska) et Omaha Beach est indéfectible tant sur le plan personnel que sur le plan émotionnel » a dit Andy Schilling, Vice-Président d’Omaha Sister Cities Association et Senior Director du Business International Développent à la Chambre de Commerce d’Omaha.
Dès les premières prises de contacts en France par l’association, tous les acteurs se sont rendu compte que cette volonté de créer un jumelage était grandement partagée. « Le devoir de mémoire, l’émotion et la reconnaissance de l’héroïsme de nos militaires pour leur sacrifice pendant le Débarquement du 6 Juin 1944 marquent l’extrême gratitude des français » dit Schilling.
Ces relations intenses et sincères seront formalisées à travers la charte de jumelage qui sera signée en octobre prochain en France.
« L’association Sister City amène le monde à Omaha », a dit la Maire Stothert, en tant que président honoraire de l’association. « Ces relations sont importantes pour notre développement tant au niveau du commerce international que de l’éducation ».
« Notre association, Sister Cities International, a une mission simple mais noble », a déclaré Schilling. « Promouvoir la paix par le respect mutuel, la compréhension et la coopération autant individuelle que collective. »
