New Program Expands Civic Engagement Through Leadership Training

Omaha, NE – The Greater Omaha Chamber, in collaboration with CIRA (Center for Immigrant & Refugee Advancement), is launching a free new program to advance civic engagement and leadership amongst Omaha’s immigrant and refugee populations.

MyCity Greater Omaha, or MyCity GO, offers hands-on learning for participants to learn how civic systems work, build leadership skills and confidence, and make meaningful connections with other leaders and organizations in the Omaha area. This program aims to foster civic engagement as well as expand social capital and cross-cultural networks in the city.

“A competitive region requires leadership and civic engagement from every sector and background. Through MyCity GO, we are equipping immigrant and refugee leaders with the tools, knowledge, and networks to help move our community forward,” said Heath Mello, President & CEO of the Greater Omaha Chamber. “When we intentionally expand who participates in civic life, we strengthen our workforce, grow our entrepreneurial ecosystem, and drive long-term economic vitality. Increasing opportunity for a key demographic through this program is a civic priority as well as an economic strategy for sustained growth.”

“When immigrant leaders are more connected and able to fully participate and contribute their talents, it strengthens the city and expands shared prosperity for all,” said Khenda Mustafa, CIRA Director of Community Engagement.

Applicants applied and underwent interviews to determine their qualifications. 24 participants were chosen for the first cohort, with others designated to a waitlist for the next cohort. The first program runs March 25 through May 20, 2026.

Upon completion of the program, participants are eligible to receive a $500 stipend and $1000 scholarship for continued professional development.
