Drenched in the glitz and gloss of the late 1970s, XANADU is MTV before there was MTV, and its brilliant colors, early computer animation and slick editing set the stage for the golden age of music videos.
The story concerns a disillusioned artist named Sonny (Michael Beck) who’s persuaded by former bandleader Danny McGuire (Gene Kelly, still debonair and spry in his last big-screen musical) and the mysterious beauty Kira (Olivia Newton-John at her most radiant and beguiling) to open a state-of-the-art roller disco called (ta da!) Xanadu. It’s doubtful, however, that Kublai Khan’s ‘stately pleasure dome’ had much in common with this place, where spandex-clad vixens, guys with over-moussed hair, tightrope walkers, and sundry clubbing cuties get down to the sounds of the Electric Light Orchestra.
The music (including Newton-John’s huge hit “Magic”) is intoxicating, the production design is out of this world, and the costumes are the last word in retro-chic. There’s also a cheerful positivity running through every frame, with dialogue like “Tomorrow’s going to be the most beautiful day in the world!” As a relic of a long-gone, dreamy era we will never see again, XANADU is positively priceless.
