Happy Holidays and Merry Christmas, YPs!

What a year 2020 has been! Certainly nothing we signed up for. My hope is each of us can find something or someone to be grateful for this year, including ourselves. In a year full of pain, sadness, and stress it is essential we guide ourselves to something positive.

This year, our council grounded ourselves in our mission. Our council serves as a catalyst to attract, develop, and retain young professionals to the Greater Omaha area through engagement, opportunity, and advocacy. It was a great exercise and a reminder of the importance of a mission. We must all ground in our personal missions to find fulfillment in our community, professional work, and personal activities.

We also asked everyone to choose a word of the year. This was something personal to each council member. I share these two points, to provide something for all YPs to do as an activity as we look forward to a new year full of potential and opportunities. No doubt we have rebuilding to do, but I have faith we will all show up for each other and our community.

I would be remiss to not mention my fellow members who are retiring to alumni status with me this year. Each one of them has made a tremendous mark and tirelessly committed to elevating our community to be more inclusive and forward thinking for all YPs. Thank you to Melanie Phelan, Ryne Bessmer, Jeremy Christensen, Moniki Gunn-Cannon, and Victor Cassone. As Melanie said, “it is see you later, not good bye!” We will all be here to continue to work towards a more prosperous Greater Omaha for everyone.

Chamber and Board leadership have decided to add an YP to the Executive Committee in 2021. This is a first and I am humbled to be able to continue to add our voice to the conversation. If I can represent anyone, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me directly at kelseyhaswell@gmail.com or to our 2021 YP Council Chair, Rebecca Atkins at omahayp@gmail.com.
