Working to engage YPs toward the achievement of social and economic equality
The ULNYP Chapter is a volunteer auxiliary of the Urban League of Nebraska. Our mission is to engage young professionals in the National Urban League’s movement toward the achievement of social and economic equality.
Our focus includes the areas of:
- Networking for YP’s of color
- Professional & Leadership Development Training for YP’s of Color
- Promotion of YP’s of color for positions of leadership within the community
To kick off 2016, we hosted our 2nd Annual Membership Mixer in February. More than 60 YPs of color joined us for speed networking and welcomed the new Executive board and committee chairs. At our monthly general meeting in March, we discussed the Greater Omaha Chamber’s Young Professionals survey. The ULNYPs spoke candidly with Urban League of Nebraska’s CEO Thomas Warren about the alarming survey result finding that “Black YPs are five to six times less likely to recommend Omaha as a place to live and work than any other race.”
Our conversation showed how passionate and committed the ULNYPs are to changing the social landscape of Omaha, as well as finding real opportunities for civic engagement. This conversation and others have inspired a task force which will be conducting a follow-up Black YP survey to be released soon.
Along the way, we’ve created other meaningful partnerships with local organizations in our mission to improve the lives of our young Black Omaha community.
Engage with us. Our monthly meetings are held the first Monday of the month (with the exception of holidays) and we have a Facebook and Instagram page to help keep our YPs informed in addition to our webpage.
