Chamber Celebrates Launch of New REACH Beyond Mentoring Program

The shared goal is higher levels of success for our small and emerging businesses. The work to make it happen is underway.

The Chamber, on July 18, celebrated the launch of REACH Beyond, a pilot mentorship program that grew from the Chamber’s two-year old REACH initiative.

“REACH Beyond is another way we’re working to support our REACH mission, which revolves around helping our small and emerging businesses land new projects and reach their strategic goals,” said Winsley Durand, REACH executive director.

REACH Beyond pairs mentors from general contracting firms with mentees from small and emerging construction companies. A kickoff lunch brought the two together for the first time to network and begin the process of agreeing on and setting goals and creating action plans.

“REACH Beyond is an opportunity to match those who want to grow with those who have established themselves, grown and now want to give back. That’s where the magic happens,” said Randy Thelen, the Chamber’s senior vice president – economic development.

All mentee businesses started their 12-month REACH Beyond experiences by taking the Gallup Clifton StrengthsFinder, the Gallup BP10 and the Bellewether FLITER assessments. The lunch gathering included one-on-one feedback sessions on the FLITER results.

“The area where the businesses struggle the most is not as technicians; it’s as business managers. That’s where we’re looking to you (the mentors) for help in taking these businesses to the next level,” said Bellewether’s Kay Saunders. “We help each other stay in business when we share information that’s valuable and relevant.”

Bellewether created a guide for each mentor/mentee pair to help facilitate their time together, encourage successful outcomes and create mutually-beneficial, long-term partnerships between businesses.

In addition to working with their mentors once-a-month, REACH Beyond mentees are connected with a team of expert volunteers who can provide additional assistance in areas, including accounting and financing, operations, strategy, human resources, and legal issues.
