House Votes to Block Debt Increase

The US House voted Wednesday to block a $1.2 trillion in the national debt ceiling on vote of 239-176-2.

Under the spending/debt agreement reached in 2011, if the Senate follows the House in approving this measure, the President can veto it, thus granting the increase in borrowing capacity.

Overriding a presidential veto requires 290 votes in the House and 67 in the Senate.
