Books by the Busload event (book giveaway)

Metropolitan Community College is teaming up with Metro, Cargo Zone LLC, Mainfreight and the Literacy Center to give away thousands of books at its annual Books by the Busload event.

Metro buses full of books will be parked at the following locations from
10 a.m.-4 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 17 and Saturday, Feb. 18:
. Westroads Mall, 10000 California St. (Dick's Sporting Goods parking lot)
. The Salvation Army Kroc Center, 2825 Y St.
. Baker's, 7312 N. 30th St.

The public is invited to board the buses and pick up free books suitable for all ages and reading levels. (Limit five books per person.)

"Education starts with literacy," said MCC President Randy Schmailzl. "When we reach out to individuals of all ages with books, we can build a community of readers-and that leads to better employment opportunities and better lives for families."

The event encourages literacy among adults and families who may not be aware of the literacy services available in Omaha. Staff members from the Literacy Center will be at each site to provide information on services the center offers to help adults improve their literacy skills.

"More than 70,000 individuals in Omaha read at an eighth grade level or below," said Kirsten Case, executive director of the Literacy Center. "This event provides an introduction to the value of reading as well as a way to reach adults who want to become better readers."

This book donation stems from the work of MCC Foundation Board Member Terry McMullen, who serves as managing director of Mainfreight USA/Omaha and president of Cargo Zone LLC. For years, McMullen has acquired extra prints of books to distribute among community organizations.

Great Northern Stone Open for Business

At the end of 2010, Dimitri was able to sell his portion of the granite fabrication company he spent the previous two years building from the ground up. It was a grand establishment with a showroom in a prime location filled with slabs of granite sparkling in the sun beating through the store front windows. There were designated sections for kitchen and/or bathroom designs in variations to the liking of any taste. He also managed the fabrication shop, located close by, where his employees where hard at work cutting and configuring the massive stones to personal taste and style and cutting exact measurements for a custom and complete counter top.

It was a leap of faith selling Mr Granite, leaving the business behind and continuing on his journey. He knew he wanted to start up a company that was involved heavily in natural stone and he was not only fortunate to find a business worth diving head-first into, but also a company that is backed by businessmen just as strong as the stone they restore.

Now, if anyone knows these fellas, you'd know that they are the most pleasant people to encounter. We spoke over the phone on several occasions and finally met them. We shared a handshake and got down to talking business. The 2011 Stone Expo in Vegas was even grander. The other members of GNS made Dimitri; and partner Ashley; immediately feel like part of the (stone) family.

Since then, Ashley and Dimtiri have been working hard to setup shop. It's taken some time, some elbow grease, some income and some gained knowledge to get to the point they are now - Open for Business

We are very pleased to announce that Great Northern Stone of Omaha is up and running in the Great Plains region and we look forward to providing restoration services to Nebraska, Iowa, Missouri, Kansas and Colorado to assist with natural stone, granite, marble, and terrazzo polishing and restoration.

Although independently owned and operated by JnV Corporation, Great Northern Stone of Omaha has a close-knit relationship with GNS in Chicago and Ontario.

We also feel we've got a good team to work with and great mentors to assist with us building a solid (as stone) business here in the Midwest.

"The only difference between stumbling blocks and stepping stones is the attitude of the walker... and your natural stone restoration company."

Ashley Mavropoulos
President at Great Northern Stone of Omaha
402.595.0052
www.greatnorthernstone.com
ashley@greatnorthernstone.com

The Irish in Omaha

Travel to Space with Travel and Transport Vacations!

We live in an age of extraordinary innovation. We accept a pace of change that even our most recent ancestors could not have imagined. Almost anything is possible and almost everything is available.

Strange then, that putting men and women into space, a pinnacle of human achievement that was conquered almost half a century ago, has remained completely out of reach to the millions who dream of crossing the final frontier...until now.

In 2004, Virgin Galactic was born and work started on creating the world's first commercial space line. This new generation of Virgin Galactic spacecraft has been designed to provide the ultimate space flight experience.

Today with Virgin Galactic, there is a new, better and proven way to get to space, one that overcomes so many of the barriers of the past. Owned and operated by Sir Richard Branson, Virgin Galactic has accepted the challenge to prove that nothing is impossible and that space travel should be made available to the world.

Across the globe, hundreds of Virgin Galactic future astronauts are preparing to turn their dreams into reality. From 50,000 feet you will soar to an altitude of around 69 miles at around 2,800 mph or nearly 3.5 times the speed of sound.

The view from your spacecraft will reveal the edge of the atmosphere and a look down upon Earth as you experience total weightlessness. This awe inspiring moment will consume you and force you to believe that you have just made history.

The countdown to this once in a lifetime experience can be yours with Travel and Transport Vacations. We are proud to have the first accredited space agent located in the Nebraska/Iowa territories and are ready to provide you with the information you need to make your space dreams a reality.

Contact Michelle Holmes, ASA, at 402-301-4996 or via email at mholmes@tandt.com to book your experience to space. http://www.tandtvacations.com/spacetravel.aspx

The Magnification Helpers Provider Discount Fund Available NOW!

The Magnification Helpers Provider Discount Fund is changing the way Nebraskan's with Low Vision can get low cost, top quality solutions in order to read.

Less than 60 days old, it has become so popular and everybody has offered feedback, we listened, and now you can order online. Check out The Magnification Helpers Provider Discount Fund website and look at these incredible, industry first low-cost solutions. These prices are only available to Nebraskans with Nebraska addresses.

This new path will help all people in Nebraska and here is why:

The Nebraska population is made up of the public sector and the private sector. The public sector can be thought of as all government and education which depends on the tax payers' money, as well as we have Not For Profits that depend on donations in order to operate. Then we have Nebraska businesses that generate revenue in order to pay bills and operate.

When I approached some Nebraska businesses about creating this plan I call "The Magnification Helpers Provider Discount Fund", it was with one goal and that was to help all Nebraskans with low vision read. With over 28 years experience in the high tech field I understand that technology is the great equalizer for persons with disabilities. Technology can help persons with low vision; i.e. Macular Degeneration, Glaucoma, Diabetic Retinopathy see text in order to read. When you can no longer see the text to read, you can scan text and the technology will read it to you.

The money saved by Nebraska Government, Education and the Not For Profit community will allow more tax dollars in the system to help more people. Businesses that desire to employ persons with low vision will save money which will also allow them to keep costs down and hire more people. Individuals that need this technology will now have the greatest savings which helps their home budget.

Now you can purchase these products online and save money as the provider discount is included in the purchase price.

I know working together we can help every Nebraskan who has low vision read by providing these products. Look at the website and purchase online today for yourself, your loved one, or maybe as a gift to help someone else you know.

www.MagnificationHelpers.com

Pat Fischer
CEO - Accessibility.net, Inc.

Nebraska Ranks 4th Nationwide Among IT-Friendly Public Policy States

A newly released study, funded in part by the AIM Institute, compares public policies (laws and programs) in all 50 states that encourage the development of information technology. The study finds that Nebraska ranks 4th nationwide in IT-friendly public policies.

The goal of the IT-Friendly Public Policy study is to show how the states rank on IT policies so that decision makers regionally can make informed judgments on public policy. Because IT is a key ingredient in economic development, state and local actions that affect IT can be important to local and regional growth.

The study ranks the states using four key categories of public policies that affect IT: research and development; infrastructure; human capital; and strengthening industry. The findings show that only 12 states have public policies specifically geared to IT in the research and development policy area; all 50 states have policies in the infrastructure policy area; 15 states have them in the human capital development policy area; and only six states have IT policies in the industry policy area.

The IT-Friendly Public Policy research study can be found at sl.aiminstitute.org/itpolicy.

The AIM Institute is a membership organization headquartered in Omaha and with additional offices in Lincoln and Scottsbluff.
