Books by the Busload event (book giveaway)

Metropolitan Community College is teaming up with Metro, Cargo Zone LLC, Mainfreight and the Literacy Center to give away thousands of books at its annual Books by the Busload event.

Metro buses full of books will be parked at the following locations from
10 a.m.-4 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 17 and Saturday, Feb. 18:
. Westroads Mall, 10000 California St. (Dick's Sporting Goods parking lot)
. The Salvation Army Kroc Center, 2825 Y St.
. Baker's, 7312 N. 30th St.

The public is invited to board the buses and pick up free books suitable for all ages and reading levels. (Limit five books per person.)

"Education starts with literacy," said MCC President Randy Schmailzl. "When we reach out to individuals of all ages with books, we can build a community of readers-and that leads to better employment opportunities and better lives for families."

The event encourages literacy among adults and families who may not be aware of the literacy services available in Omaha. Staff members from the Literacy Center will be at each site to provide information on services the center offers to help adults improve their literacy skills.

"More than 70,000 individuals in Omaha read at an eighth grade level or below," said Kirsten Case, executive director of the Literacy Center. "This event provides an introduction to the value of reading as well as a way to reach adults who want to become better readers."

This book donation stems from the work of MCC Foundation Board Member Terry McMullen, who serves as managing director of Mainfreight USA/Omaha and president of Cargo Zone LLC. For years, McMullen has acquired extra prints of books to distribute among community organizations.

At the end of 2010, Dimitri was able to sell his portion of the granite fabrication company he spent the previous two years building from the ground up. It was a grand establishment with a showroom in a prime location filled with slabs of granite sparkling in the sun beating through the store front windows. There were designated sections for kitchen and/or bathroom designs in variations to the liking of any taste. He also managed the fabrication shop, located close by, where his employees where hard at work cutting and configuring the massive stones to personal taste and style and cutting exact measurements for a custom and complete counter top.

It was a leap of faith selling Mr Granite, leaving the business behind and continuing on his journey. He knew he wanted to start up a company that was involved heavily in natural stone and he was not only fortunate to find a business worth diving head-first into, but also a company that is backed by businessmen just as strong as the stone they restore.

Now, if anyone knows these fellas, you'd know that they are the most pleasant people to encounter. We spoke over the phone on several occasions and finally met them. We shared a handshake and got down to talking business. The 2011 Stone Expo in Vegas was even grander. The other members of GNS made Dimitri; and partner Ashley; immediately feel like part of the (stone) family.

Since then, Ashley and Dimtiri have been working hard to setup shop. It's taken some time, some elbow grease, some income and some gained knowledge to get to the point they are now - Open for Business

We are very pleased to announce that Great Northern Stone of Omaha is up and running in the Great Plains region and we look forward to providing restoration services to Nebraska, Iowa, Missouri, Kansas and Colorado to assist with natural stone, granite, marble, and terrazzo polishing and restoration.

Although independently owned and operated by JnV Corporation, Great Northern Stone of Omaha has a close-knit relationship with GNS in Chicago and Ontario.

Easter Basket Donations for the Elderly

Help our elders celebrate Easter by collecting items for their Easter baskets.

Items needed: Easter baskets, individually wrapped pieces of candy, trail mix, crackers, 100 calorie pack cookies, Easter grass, wash cloths, travel size facial tissues, granola bars, oatmeal packages, tea bags, personal care items - toothpaste, toothbrushes, small shampoos & conditioners (for men & women), body lotion, hand lotion, deodorant, etc.

Little Brothers-Friends of the Elderly (LBFE) is a national network of non-profit, volunteer based organizations committed to relieving isolation and loneliness among the elderly.

One of the ways we do this is by delivering 135 Easter baskets to our Old Friends in the Greater Omaha Metropolitan Area over Easter weekend. Baskets are assembled at the LBFE located in the Center Mall.

Omaha, Neb., January 23, 2011 - Omaha Performing Arts is proud to announce that the Orpheum Theater, which is professionally managed by Omaha Performing Arts, has earned a spot on the Pollstar Year End Worldwide Ticket Sales Top 100 Theatre Venues list for 2011.

Pollstar, the only trade publication covering the worldwide concert industry, listed Omaha's Orpheum Theater as 16th out of 100 theatre venues for worldwide ticket sales with 224,524 tickets reported for the period of Jan. 1, 2011 to Dec. 31, 2011.

Ticket figures include selected national presentations reportable to Pollstar during that period. In June 2011, the Orpheum Theater was listed 13th out of 100 theatre venues in Pollstar's mid-year report, with 148,099 tickets reported for the period of Jan. 1, 2011 to June 30, 2011.

WCA Tribute to Women Celebrates 25 Years and Seeks Nominations

Friday, January 27, 2012. For 25 years, Tribute to Women, the Women's Center for Advancement (formerly the YWCA) signature event, has celebrated the achievements of Omaha's distinguished leaders. The contributions of the honorees make our community extraordinary.

Five women will be honored on Tuesday, June 5 at the annual luncheon. The intent and purpose of this award is to recognize women in our community who have set an example of human achievement and who serve as active role models of citizenship, accomplishment, service and/or overcoming challenging life circumstances.

Upon completion of the Nebraska bar examination, he became an associate attorney.

Steven practices in the areas of real estate, banking and litigation. He graduated with his Bachelor of Science summa cum laude from Northern State University in 2005 and received his Juris Doctor summa cum laude from Creighton University School of Law in 2011.

The Irish played a key role in the settlement and growth of Omaha and Douglas County. Attorney Jim Cavanaugh traces the major players and the supporting cast that shaped early Omaha - from the Creightons, Gallaghers and Boyds to Father Flanagan and beyond.

He'll also tell of Tom Riley, the county's first Irish sheriff, Father John Cavanaugh, a relative who was the first parish priest in Omaha, and other lesser-known immigrants from the land of Eire.

Mr. Cavanaugh is a fifth generation Nebraskan and a member of the Irish American Cultural Institute of Nebraska.

The talk is presented through the auspices of the Nebraska Humanities Council by the Douglas County Historical Society, with funding provided by the Dr. C.C. and Mabel L. Criss Memorial Foundation.

Nebraska Ranks 4th Nationwide Among IT-Friendly Public Policy States

A newly released study, funded in part by the AIM Institute, compares public policies (laws and programs) in all 50 states that encourage the development of information technology. The study finds that Nebraska ranks 4th nationwide in IT-friendly public policies.

The goal of the IT-Friendly Public Policy study is to show how the states rank on IT policies so that decision makers regionally can make informed judgments on public policy. Because IT is a key ingredient in economic development, state and local actions that affect IT can be important to local and regional growth.

The study ranks the states using four key categories of public policies that affect IT: research and development; infrastructure; human capital; and strengthening industry. The findings show that only 12 states have public policies specifically geared to IT in the research and development policy area; all 50 states have policies in the infrastructure policy area; 15 states have them in the human capital development policy area; and only six states have IT policies in the industry policy area.

Douglas County Clerk Provides Transparency on Payments Made with County Taxpayer Dollars

Douglas County Clerk Tom Cavanaugh is publishing the listing of payments made with county taxpayer dollars to suppliers used by the county during the 2011 calendar year. The listing can be found today on the Clerk's website at www.douglascountyclerk.org. To access this information, simply click on the "Calendar Year Supplier Payments" button on the right side of the webpage.

"The Clerk's office is dedicated to improving transparency and accountability on how Douglas County citizens' tax dollars are being spent," Cavanaugh said.

The County Clerk is also publishing on this website the 2011 fiscal year Comprehensive Annual Financial Report (CAFR) and the 2011 fiscal year Popular Annual Financial Report (PAFR). The Clerk's office has received the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting from the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) for CAFRs submitted each year since 2004. And once again it has received the Award for Outstanding Achievement in Popular Annual Financial Reporting from the GFOA.

Additional financial information found on the Clerk's website includes Douglas County's adopted budget, weekly payments approved by the Board of Commissioners, monthly departmental expense vs. budget reports, and information about SIDs, marriage licenses, and County Board records.

In November we hosted 3 FREE workouts that benefited the Foodbank for the Heartland here in Omaha.

We had such an overwhelming response of people who wanted to participate to help those in need (donated 292 lbs of food!), that we decided to do it again in December.

That is why we have decided to open our doors for another fun filled Saturday workout and do a toy drive for Toys for Tots.

On Saturday, December 17th at 7, 8 and 9 am we're doing free "Holiday workout" at SG Human Performance. The only cost to come to class and get in a great workout around Christmas is just one new unwrapped toy to help those kids that are less fortunate. Use this link to sign up.
